Surface preparation is often an extremely overlooked part of the picture making process and there is a large variety of ways you can prepare your surface to change the visual impact of your media, and helping you to find the results you want in your works!
We are very pleased to have Wallace Seymour coming to Rabbet to share their wealth of knowledge and lead in this practical workshop.
The first part of the day will be spent preparing canvases and boards, and the second part will be preparing papers.

Morning Workshop (11am - 1pm) - Preparing canvas for oil and acrylic paint
Construction of wood stretchers for canvas – stretching canvas/linen – sizing using natural glue (rabbit skin), with subsequent oil-based priming ground. For oil painting.
Application of Acrylic Size, Acrylic Primer, Acrylic Gesso, for oil and acrylic painting.
Natural Gesso for Panels – choice of wood/panels – use of casein painting ground – dilutes with water, less flexible than rabbit skin glue/acrylic.
Afternoon Workshop (2pm to 4pm) – Preparing Paper/Panels for drawing and water-based/mixed-media applications.
For water-based paints:
Rabbit skin glue – simple size ground to reduce absorbency of art papers.
Natural Gesso (Casein) – absorbent white ground, dried film is very matt.
Surface Preparation for Drawing:
Bone ash Ground
Marble Dust Ground
Pumice Ground
Murano Glass Ground
Water-based (acrylic) grounds for drawing, to create different degrees of tooth when applied to paper surfaces.
Sample materials provided within the cost of the workshop.
Just bring a notebook!
