Tom Robertson Lead White Substitute R - 40ml

£26.50

Ground by hand in small batches by Tom Robertson

About Lead White Substitute R:

For the historically curious painter, in a contemporary studio. Pigment White 5 (PW5) with a secondary pigment to modify the handling behaviour. Ground in cold pressed linseed oil. Price per single 40 ml tube.

Lead White has a long and rich history within the tradition of painting. Many artists who look to replicate mark making within their work from old and contemporary masters may find this near impossible without various mediums when working with Titanium White.

Substitute R is a Lead White replacement I created for contemporary painters wishing to explore the personality of the historic paint. It is a non-toxic formulation using Lithopone White with a secondary pigment that provides working qualities approximating Cremnitz White, which has now been phased out for artists working within the UK owing to its toxicity.

Substitute R allows for an altogether different working style compared to the standard Titanium White in rotation within most painter’s palettes today.

It will facilitate the application of impasto which will pull out when working with a brush, mimicking certain ropey qualities in Lead Whites, allowing for novel surface effects without the need to rely on auxiliary mediums.

Out of the tube, Substitute R can appear deceptively loose and free and may take you by surprise, however when incorporated into a painting it has a lot of grab and will build in successive applications for robust bodies of impasto. This one has rather exaggerated working properties compared to traditional Lead Whites and you can coil, pull and dash with it wonderfully once you get the hang of it! For something more tame, consider my Lead White Substitute S.

In indirect painting methods, it is particularly good at creating glints in eyes or reflective surfaces that are all too familiar if you are versed with the old masters. In direct, or thicker painting approaches it would perhaps find a place in styles of working similar to that of Freud, or potentially early Auerbach if mixed sparingly with earths. Lead White Substitute R is exceptionally fun to use!.”
